Youth Ministry Dating Resource

You can’t hang around teenagers for long without realising that having a boyfriend or girlfriend or not having one is a big deal. So how do we respond as youth workers? I’ve collected my extensive notes and a link to my talk on the topic of dating here [...]

My Abortion response

I wrote this post in late 2008 when the Victorian Parliament was debating our current abortion laws. I thought I would feature this post in order to keep the topic on the agenda (and because it took me ages to write…) [...]

YouTube is 5 years old

Posted by Chris Bowditch Wednesday, May 19, 2010 0 comments: ADD COMMENTS

Hard to believe that only 5 years ago there was no YouTube!  What did people do to procrastinate or spread the word about something?  How did you watch something funny that happened on TV the night before?  YouTube sure has changed the way we interact with each other and the way we use the internet.

In celebration YouTube have set up this cool 5 year part of their site.  It has people telling their YouTube stories, like the beat boxing flute player whose video I posted on this blog a few years back.  As well as a timeline where you can watch all the key YouTube videos of the past, including the first ever video uploaded!

Virginity Auction

Posted by Chris Bowditch Friday, May 14, 2010 2 comments: ADD COMMENTS

In case you didn't see this on my twitter feed the other day, a film is being made by an Australian about two people who are going to sell their virginity in an auction. He has to go to America to film it though because he'll get charged with soliciting sex for sale here in Victoria if he goes through with it here.

I find the whole thing quite sad. The girl in the video says, she's doing it to change the way people think about sex... Sadly I'd have to say virgin fantasies are part and parcel of porn films and people have been paying for sex for thousands of years... so there isn't really any major mind-shifts here...

She also says something along the lines of I can't find a good man that i'd want to do it with so I thought I'd do this... Again, the man who buys your virginity is not going to be the kind of man you would want to lose it with. The whole thing sucks for this poor girl. I'm glad her Dad was pissed when he found out. That is good parenting!

She doesn't think she'll regret it and says she thinks she'll probably look back and laugh at it as something crazy... That is definitely a best case scenario. I hope she meets Jesus soon!

Sunday Morning

I've seen this video in a couple of places recently and it got me thinking... (watch the video below before continuing).

"Sunday's Coming" Movie Trailer from North Point Media on Vimeo.

Anyway, it got me thinking a few things.  But mainly I thought it was a reminder that if we're striving for creativity and relevance and freshness in our services (which we may or may not be) then we actually need to do better than simply modernising the liturgy and dressing cooler.  We should also avoid copying another churches culture into our services (i.e. lets meet like Hillsong because they are large).

How do you work out ways of worshiping as a community, particularly of young people, that are relevant and culturally contextualised to your group?

I like 24. It's the only show on TV i would probably class myself as obsessed with. Even then, I'm not too bad. I've never spent any money on 24, just lots of time.

Whoa - These people are crazy

I cannot even understand how someone would arrive at the idea that the KJV is the only Bible that God approves of? It makes no sense. The Bible wasn't written in English therefore it must always be translated. 500 year old English sucks for 12 year old kids and most 25-50 year old adults, so why not update the translation from the original languages as many have done? They even admit in the video that they think other Bibles are ok in other languages... One word: stupid. I'll be keen to see if the book burning BBQ grew their church to 15 members or more!

Driscoll on 'guys who shave'

Posted by Chris Bowditch Wednesday, November 11, 2009 8 comments: ADD COMMENTS

I didn't really like this. I actually thought Driscoll at times sounded like the complaining boy he was absolutely destroying on stage. He took about 15mins to make one point.

I'm just not sure belittling is the way forward for a pastor to encourage his flock to grow in Godliness...

Having said that, he got better in the last 5-7mins.

Secret Sins

This is a great sermon by Ed Stetzer. The video and notes are available here.

The take home message is:

The lie: Secret sin in your life and in the church will not hinder the mission of God.

The answer: Live a gospel-centered, repentance-filled life.

Jesus is my Lord and Saviour and I pose in Playboy

Posted by Chris Bowditch Thursday, June 18, 2009 0 comments: ADD COMMENTS

So you're thinking WHAT? How can you claim the first and do the second. Well apparently it can be done.

I went home for lunch a couple of days ago. I turned the TV on and watched 5 mins of a show called "The View".

One of the women on this show says:

I read a quote that said your goal is to be a true disciple of Jesus (the aforementioned Lord) and also of Mother Teressa helping the poor and hungry. I also heard you're posing for playboy, do you think Mother Teressa would have done that?

Heidi Montag replies by basically admitting she's done it and it will be tasteful and that's ok for a 'modern' version of Mother Teressa... I hope her Pastor saw this and lovingly corrects her.

It's about 2:25 mins in on this video.

You Spin me right round Jesus

Posted by Chris Bowditch 3 comments: ADD COMMENTS

Few things make me laugh out loud. This video did. He starts by asking them to take their shoes of like Moses did so nothing is separating them from the Holy Place of God (I thought Jesus did that?) and then South Park style replaces the word 'baby' for 'Jesus' in a medley of secular songs. A must watch!!

The Ideal Youth Minister

Great video (fictional) really showing up some of our perceptions about what it takes to be a Youth Pastor/Minister and what really is at the core of who we are and what we do. (I love the Louie Gigglio rip off talk!)

H/T to Wayne who put me onto this through Twitter!
